Biography

John McQuaig is a composer for media and a pianist based in New York City. His music has been heard on TV and streaming shows (Dateline NBC) and in Oscar-qualifying film festivals (Woodstock Film Festival, St. Louis Film Festival). Recent work had him collaborating with filmmaker alumni of such festivals as the Tribeca Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, and Austin Film Festival. He is a composer for 4 Elements Music, a production music library based in New York City. His work is driven by story, exploring both traditional and non-traditional techniques to create singular scores that reach the narrative core of any given project. With an extensive musical vocabulary and training - a Master 's degree in Screen Scoring and Master's degree in Piano Performance from New York University - he has the keen ability to expertly link story and music. John is a member of the Society of Composers and Lyricists (SCL) and Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI). In 2024, he was chosen to be a part the competitive SCL Mentor Program.

John is equally comfortable in the realm of traditional orchestral scoring as he is in electronic music, rock, jazz, and other idioms. His signature sound is characterized by vibrant textures, evocative melodies, rich orchestration, and forward-momentum.
