Sam Harkness and his half-brother Reed go on a road trip to find their missing mom. But solving the mystery of her disappearance is only the beginning of their story.
- from Reed Harkness, director, SAM NOW:
“We searched far and wide for a composer for SAM NOW. All the options we pursued would have been interesting and made for a pretty different feeling movie. At one point in time, John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats was going to do the music. Stephen Malkamus entertained the idea too. We got demos from a whole bunch of composers that I love.
When Roger watched our early cut of SAM NOW, I could immediately tell this was a good match. There was something in his eyes and reaction. He really got it. I could visualize so many aspects of how SAM NOW would come together, but not the music themes. The reference playlists I made on Spotify are 24 hours in total, yet I really wanted simplicity.
When I got the first demos from Roger, I stopped everything and was lying on the couch listening to his tracks on loop. I can’t explain the feeling of that. Maybe it’s like reconnecting with a long lost relative. I know you, but don’t know you. I was caught in a state of realization that all along this was what I was looking for, but at the same time they were new and unfamiliar.
One beautiful thing about the Sam theme, it works across the movie in any emotional state or direction Sam is in. I am still in disbelief by how well this all came together. Roger is a wonderful collaborator and masterful composer, the team and I are so grateful for this opportunity. The music is so good on its own too, go listen to it.”
ZURICH FILM FESTIVAL - 2022 Winner Golden Eye - Best International Documentary Film:
"This film stood out to all of us as the finest that cinema can do. Which is sending the viewer on a journey of introspection and questioning of human life and human relationships. In our crazy and collapsing world, being able to understand, accept and reach for the others is certainly crucial to remember. Thanks to this wonderful filmmakers and their family, for their courage to share their journey of pain and healing with us."
