Film Score Background

The film score is a collaboration between John Joseph Wiater and long-time friend and artist/songwriter/producer collaborator Matt Fell. John and Matt attended Penn State University together and were in an indie pop band in Philadelphia, where I Think I’m Sick Director Danny Gevirtz made the band's first music videos and photoshoots.

The score is primarily a textural ambient score mixed with choral elements. Like the story of the film, it balances calming and light moods and tones with moments of heightened cognitive fear, panic, and anxiety.

The film score is one of, if not the, first film core to make heavy use and influence of "binaural beats", an audio-psychology technique that creates an audio illusion and is most associated with brain waves, focus music, and therapeutic healing.

John Joseph Wiater

John has scored over a 15 genre-spanning films from an Oscar-qualifying family drama short to a dark comedy on suicide awareness, to espionage, romance, and sci-fi adventures. Each brings a new perspective to the storytelling world, and that is what he centers his composing on telling stories.

His music is emotive and melodic - striking a physical and emotional reaction from viewers by bringing familiarity and a recognizable tune. John's passion for storytelling is welcomed by his directors and filmmaking teams, often highlighted by his ability to convey the goals of a scene through the score itself. His approach to film scoring is that of a collaboration between composer and director.

As a film composer, he believes firmly in emphasizing the story being told by the director, actors, and screenwriters; that a strong original score elevates a media project and tells a story more impactfully.

John's most recent credits include the debut feature from Danny Gevirtz "I Think I'm Sick", which portrays a young man's second chance at life after a failed suicide attempt. The score was a collaboration with long-time musical collaborator Matt Fell, and featured a textural scoring inspired by binaural beats and chord vocals.

Prior to I Think I'm Sick, John scores the award-winning family drama How to Make Shepherd's Pie (streaming on Omeleto), and the sci-fi drama Domani, featuring a wonderfully blended score of ambient electronic and orchestral music, the crime-drama short The Wildwoods, featuring an eerie and foreboding score, and the Amazon Prime documentary short, Ashes to Idols, which highlights a prison reform and pollution activist movement.

John has a strong following on social media through his educational and film composer and music production-centric content, and a large fanbase for his artistic compositions streaming on music platforms.
