This project is a video entitled, "The Blacksmith". The blacksmith's name is Volund, a large man and brutish desert dweller who possesses magical powers along with his smithing craft. It's a video that I as a Sound Designer was required to add audio effects to for a recent college class. My work consisted of inserting Foley (creating sound from unrelated sources) effects, some created my me and some from a sound library called "Soundly". I also added special effects such as ambient background sounds, including weather effects like thunder and rustling wind. There are desert animal sounds, crows and insects added as well.
Other effects included shards of metal falling magically from the ceiling, chair squeaks and door sounds. Sounds of Volund's movements are dubbed in... the jingling of his tools belt as he walks and the creaking of his leather belt create a rather eery yet intriguing atmosphere as he walks. I edited most of these sounds using a 7 band equalizer called EQ3 Digital Audio Workstation called Pro Tools.
As Volund rises from his chair, he casts a spell levitating the shards of metal above his head. Then passing under them he continues the spell, having them all drop to the stone floor. I used sounds from the Soundly library for the falling shards, but lowered the pitch, as well as using a low-pass filter to properly project a more heavy metal impact on-stone effect.. He passes thru his massive wooden door opening up to a desert wind storm. This massive door effect, again from Soundly needed a pitch adjustment. Here I used Pro Tools Audio Suite Pitch Shift II add-on to pitch the sound down to a lower frequency like an huge old wooden castle door would sound. It all worked well.
