Miu Sato is a New York-based Japanese composer for film and theatre, passionate about storytelling and amplifying underrepresented voices. Born and primarily raised in Singapore, she enjoys exploring a wide range of sonic palettes and incorporating her unique exposure to various cultures and experiences in her works. She recently orchestrated and performed her original song “Home” at a tribute concert honoring and featuring Disney Legend, Alan Menken.
Miu is a recipient of the Alan Menken Scholarship and Production Music Association Scholarship. She holds a Diploma in Piano Music Performance from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), a B.M. in Screen Scoring from NYU, and is currently pursuing her M.M. in Screen Scoring at the same institution. She is also the co-founder of Her Voice Film Festival, a film festival dedicated to amplify the voices of women-identifying film composers.
She has scored many award-winning independent films, with her music featured in various film festivals such as the Chelsea Film Festival, FilmOut San Diego LGBTQ+ Film Festival, Silicon Valley AAPI Film Festival, New York Indie Theatre Film Festival, and San Diego Asian Film Festival. She is currently composing music for a new original musical in development titled, Neverland Never Ends, which recently received 5 nominations (including Best Production) at the New York Theater Festival and won Best Musical Score.
In addition to her work as a composer, she has music directed at 54 Below for a night of Celebrating Diversity in Theatre, served as the AMD/Keys 1 for an Off-Broadway production of Into the Woods, and has also toured nationally with artists, performing on keys at renowned venues such as the Troubadour and Meow Wolf.
