Hans Michael Anselmo Hess is an award-winning Brazilian-born British film composer. He believes that great film music should create a meaningful and compelling rhetoric with film narratives. Moreover, film music should evoke the vision of the story, creating an emotional bond with the audience.

Hans' signature style is predominantly melodic and orchestral, yet he loves to experiment, utilising his classical guitar background with other instruments. He is an enthusiast of the 'hybridization' of musical genres and, whenever appropriate to a project, incorporates this into his musical language to bring bold, different, and innovative approaches to film scoring.

Hans has been commissioned to write music for feature films such as Space Goblins (filming), Advent - A Christmas Anthology (post-production), Dilemma (coming soon), You Are My Sunshine, Sustain, Clownface, Carnival of Sorrows, and Consequence. He is also a prolific production music producer, collaborating with labels such as BMG Production Music, Figure And Groove, Atom Music, Dos Brains, Wrong Planet, Amadea Music, Bleach Productions, Muchas Music, Gargantuan Music, Felt Music and others. Additionally, Hans has been working as a freelance composer for music companies such as Squeak E Clean, Da House Audio and Amp Sound Branding. 

Expanding his repertoire, Hans is embarking on his first soundtrack for a video game project financed by the UK Game Fund. The game is a cinematic adventure story about a son trying to reconnect with his father through lost memories, featuring big boss fight dynamics.

Hans's musical journey began with the recorder, but his brothers' influence, particularly their love for heavy metal bands like Iron Maiden, led him to learn the electric guitar. Later, he fell in love with the classical guitar, inspired by the music of Leo Brouwer and Brazilian guitar music. This passion drove him to pursue a BA in Music with an emphasis on guitar performance at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil.

In 2006, Hans moved to England to further his studies at the University of Bristol, where he earned a Master’s degree in Composition of Music for Film and Television. In 2014, he completed his PhD in Film Musicology, focusing on the use of Samba in Brazilian films. 

In addition to his industry experience, Hans is deeply committed to academia. He currently serves as a senior lecturer in film music composition at Leeds Conservatoire. Beginning in September 2024, he will take on a new role as the course leader for Music & Sound for Film & Television at dBs Institute's Bristol Campus.
