Shengyuan Li is a LA-based composer and music producer with a diverse background in classical, electronic, and orchestral music. His musical journey began with piano studies, drawing inspiration from classical masters such as Bach, Beethoven, and Rachmaninoff. At the age of 13, he expanded his expertise to percussion, mastering instruments ranging from drum set and marimba to traditional Chinese percussion. This led to an eight-year tenure as the principal percussionist of the Shanghai Youth Symphony Orchestra, deepening his passion for orchestral music and orchestration.
His musical interests later expanded into electronic music production and sound design, developing proficiency with various DAWs, synthesizers, and production techniques. Recognizing the power of combining orchestral and electronic elements, he pursued a Bachelor of Music in Technology and Applied Composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he studied under esteemed mentors such as Daria Novoliantceva, Lennie Moore, and Taurin Barrera. Currently, he is further refining his craft in Screen Scoring at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, under the guidance of Professor Jeanine Cowen.
As a composer, Shengyuan has received multiple accolades, including first place in the 2023 Indie Film Music Contest and the prestigious 6th Xunguang Microcosm Award (2024), which granted him $40,000. His works have been featured in international scoring competitions such as Leicine, Berlin International Film Scoring Competition, and Score the World. His compositions span a wide array of media, including commercial advertisements (such as Line Friends’ Metro-City Campaign), animation films (Sue’s Art, winner of the Best Directing Award), and various short films in Los Angeles and New York.
With expertise in orchestral scoring, electronic music production, and interactive media, Shengyuan seamlessly blends concert and hybrid orchestration, EDM, jazz, funk, and ethnic influences into his compositions. His technical proficiency includes Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Ableton, Wwise, Unity, and notation software like Dorico and Sibelius.
