Dr. Ross Mitchell is a pianist, composer, and musicologist whose musical practice focuses on synthesizing his three musical roles - performer, composer, and scholar. His compositional style is highly syncretic and informed by his broad knowledge of various musical styles historical and contemporary, from Schoenberg to Machaut to Uematsu. Ross received his PhD in Musicology for his interdisciplinary research on the Russian composer Alexander Skryabin, who held similar goals of synthesis and cohesion:
"For us now begins a new synthesis: harmony becomes melody and melody becomes harmony...and for me there is no distinction between melody and harmony - they are one and the same." - Alexander Skryabin, quoted in Leonid Sabaneev, Reminiscences on Skryabin, translated by Dr. Ross Mitchell.
