When unsuspecting Chloe is set up on a date with her ex-boyfriend, she is forced to relive the pain and joy of the relationship. Will reflecting on the past bring old feelings to the surface?
To support this story of a conflicted romance, the score needed to follow the range of emotional shifts between moments of love and regret. It needed to propel the film forward and avoid sentimentality. The filmmaker and I settled on a small indie rock instrumentation, and a series of harmonic progressions that supported lighter and darker moments in the story.
Sound Design: Background sounds needed to quickly establish context—a bowling alley, a classic movie on TV offscreen—without drawing attention to themselves, or competing with score or dialogue. Field recordings and public domain films provided source material that was tailored to the film.
