Biography

James Burnett is a composer, songwriter, producer, and music supervisor working across records and visual media.

His music is intuitive and performance-led, focused on emotion and storytelling that reflects both the human experience and spiritual experience. He grew up playing guitar and piano and writing songs in bands, then studied film scoring and composition at Berklee College of Music. His sound blends band and orchestral instrumentation with folk, classical, and world textures, alongside electronic and experimental recording.

As executive music producer for Deadpool 2, James helped bring to life “Ashes” by Celine Dion, which became a global hit. His songwriting credits include “Settle,” the lead single from Jordan Smith’s #1 album Something Beautiful, and “Craving” by Arty and Audien, a Billboard Dance #1.

He composed the original runway score Billy Shakespeare for Prophetik’s landmark show at London Fashion Week, the first and only show ever held at the Tower of London, performed live by a string quartet and acoustic ensemble.

Recent projects as executive music producer and music supervisor include Amazon MGM Studios’ series American Gladiators; Alec Roth and Al Pacino’s film Billy Knight; Stone Village Pictures’ docu-series In Search of Love; and David Henrie and Selena Gomez’s film This Is The Year; Jimmy Fallon’s NBC series On Brand; and HBO’s docu-series Celtics City.

Q&A

What’s a hobby or passion outside of music that fuels your creativity?

Surfing, nature, traveling. I get so much inspiration from being in the ocean, the mountains, and meeting people from different cultures.

Which album would you bring if you were stranded on a desert island, and why?

Legend by Bob Marley and The Wailers. They tapped into something from another place. The music feels like peace and connection, speaking to both life's struggles and a sense of hope.

If your studio had a theme song when you walked in each morning, what would it be?

"Takin' Care Of Business" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive. The song reminds me of that scene from A Night's Tale when Heath Ledger keeps winning at competitive sword fighting and it always makes me smile.
