Jasmin Lacasse Roy is a Montreal-based composer who works in the seam between acoustic instruments and electronic sound. Classically trained as a guitarist to doctoral level at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal and the Université de Montréal, he spent over a decade writing for solo guitar, chamber music, and orchestra before moving into film, with postgraduate studies in film composition in 2024.
That dual background defines his scores. JLR is as comfortable writing a strong melodic line as he is dismantling one, often setting clear, lyrical writing against passages of dense texture and audio treatment, with the virtuosic guitar technique of his concert career not far behind. He draws on contemporary classical technique without being bound by it, taking an unorthodox, genre-bending approach to pairing the human imperfection of an acoustic instrument with electronic processing, until the seam between the two disappears, like a wire pulled taut that never quite snaps.
His concert works, including Il vento della Sardegna, performed by the Orchestra Regionale Sarda in Italy, and The Human Experience for choir, have premiered internationally, and his solo guitar piece Mile End Météores has been broadcast across nine countries.
Since 2024 he has scored a steady run of shorts and documentaries, with selections including Duchess 17, winner of the Audience Award for Best Short at the Fantasia International Film Festival, and Tomate at the Nikon Film Festival France.
