John W. Marshall
Biography

Canadian composer John W. Marshall is a film, television, and video game composer based in Toronto, Canada. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, John began working professionally in the video game industry just five months after graduating, contributing to an unannounced title for Nightdive Studios (Atari) through his work with game developer Loading Studios on their IP, Biodrive. His work in video games also includes a collaboration with Polish game developer Sollaris Studios, alongside work in advertising and independent films made in Canada and the United States.

John's recent film work includes the science fiction short A Poet in Plain Clothes, where he also served as Supervising Sound Editor, the action short Looking Sharp, thriller short Ferme ta Bouche, and comedy short What’s Inside That Counts, which received second place in the Audience Choice Awards at the 48 Hour Film Project in Toronto. In 2025 he also developed the horror and science fiction instrument called the Eldritch Whisper Box that captured the attention of sound editors in Hollywood.

Beyond screen composition, John has an extensive background as a DJ and hip-hop and electronic music producer. His work includes writing and producing advertisement music for Memorial University with artist Timo Sargent, as well as mixing and mastering for international artists including rappers Cheff (CA) and Movements (UK).

Outside of film, John has also served as a Juno Awards juror for the Electronic Album and Best Dance Recording categories. Drawing on his background as a DJ and electronic music producer, his scores combine memorable orchestral melodies with modern electronic textures, reflecting a musical identity shaped by years of performance, production, and curating.
