While classically trained on the Piano from young, boyd has developed a distinctive orchestral language that combines piano, analogue synthesis and detailed acoustic string writing. His performances expand this language into immersive environments, using light, spatial sound and live instrumentation to reshape the traditional concert experience.

Central to his evolving live practice is an ongoing collaboration with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. In November 2025, boyd presented the sold-out concert Resonance at the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Neilson Pier 2/3, performing alongside a nine-piece string ensemble featuring senior Brandenburg musicians. The performance brought together original orchestration, piano, synthesis and live electronics within an immersive lighting design by André Vanderwert.

This collaboration continues in September 2026 and February 2027 with a major new performance in Sydney, featuring an expanded string ensemble and a newly orchestrated body of work. The concert will form the live introduction to boyd’s forthcoming album, currently being written and recorded for release later this year.

boyd also maintains an ongoing creative partnership with French instrument makers Expressive E. As the first Australian artists to represent and work closely with the company, he uses the Osmose polyphonic synthesiser throughout his live performances and recordings, treating electronic sound with the physicality and nuance of an acoustic instrument.

His debut album, Rite of Passage, was released in 2024. Recorded live with a string quintet at Sydney’s Studio 301, the eight-part work established the foundations of his sound: intimate piano, chamber orchestration and electronic production shaped into a deeply personal narrative.

Alongside his work as a recording and live artist, boyd composes and orchestrates extensively for film. His screen work carries the same focus found throughout his broader practice, building emotional worlds through the meeting of experimental orchestration , electronic texture and sound design.
