Producer – Sound Designer – Sound Engineer
Motja is an Italian electronic composer, sound designer, and multidisciplinary performer whose work explores sound as both material and narrative.
Motja’s artistic practice moves between dark ambient, experimental electronics, IDM, and club-oriented forms, guided by a compositional approach rooted in contemporary music, electroacoustic practices, and sound design for visual and performative contexts. His work is characterized by dense textures, non-linear structures, and the transformation of concrete sound—foley, voice, noise—into immersive sonic environments.
His musical language is influenced by experimental pioneers such as Edgar Varèse, John Cage, Delia Derbyshire, and American minimalism, as well as by contemporary cinema, classical literature, psychiatry, and Tanztheater. These references converge in a practice where sound functions as a dramaturgical and spatial element, translating psychological states, visual imagery, and collective memory into sound. Whether composing for theater, dance, or standalone releases, sound is treated as a narrative device rather than a purely musical one.
He studied Electronic Music, Mixing, Mastering, and Sound Engineering at Fonderie Sonore in Rome, becoming an Ableton Live Certified User. During this period, he was mentored by P41, who supported the development of his first productions. His debut single Lamentation was released in 2021 as part of the compilation Tempus Fugit, followed in 2023 by his debut EP Exsilium on Festina Lente Dischi, featuring reworks by Francesco Cerasi and Agostino Maria Ticino (Decomposer), and a remix by Ominostanco. In 2025, he released Canticle of Innocent, a dark ambient suite conceived as a series of sonic meditations on collective Palestinian trauma.
Alongside his compositional work, Motja is active as a sound designer and sound editor, collaborating with major publishing and audiovisual organizations such as Audible Studios, Mondadori, Feltrinelli, and Black Light Film. Across these projects, his practice emphasizes attention to sonic detail, texture, and emotional depth, spanning music composition, sound editing, and post-production.
His live practice extends his studio research into performance. He presents hybrid sets combining live electronics, foley recordings, vocal samples, IDM structures, and analog instruments such as the SOMA Terra, which plays a central role in his performances. These live works are often developed in close dialogue with contemporary dance and theater productions, where he performs soundtracks live, adapting them to movement, space, and dramaturgy.
Parallel to his artistic work, Motja maintains a strong educational commitment. He is the creator and instructor of a course dedicated to conscious listening and sound creation, aimed at young people and students within the Biblioteche di Roma network, where sound is approached as both an artistic and critical practice.
He is a resident artist on Rough Radio with the show Chronicle and is affiliated with the labels ECHO Recordings, Bazar Sauvage, Dark Forest Rec and Festina Lente Dischi. He has performed at venues and festivals across Italy and France, including Portatronica Festival, EccentrikaFest, ZipFest, and Festival Guimo.
“What we hear is mostly noise. When we ignore it, it disturbs us. When we listen to it, we find it fascinating.”
— John Cage
